The manga is very close to the anime... it doesn't matter which one you read first. I've read some of the manga and all of the anime. Honestly if you're up to date about countries in Europe right now and in the World Wars and before, this anime isn't the kind with "spoilers". Kind of like Nichijou, for example. There's nothing to "spoil". So go ahead and immerse yourself in the Hetalia fanfiction! Just watch out for the raging fandom!
