The first book is best described as a "quiet epic." It's epic in size and scope and has plenty of suspense, but otherwise it's "quiet." The second installment is about the ensuing war, so if that sounds good to you, then by all means, check it out! Be warned, though, that the ending has fantasy cliche #4582, so the book is hardly original.
