Is it best? Yes
Is it necessary? No
Gitanjili I have become a great fan of the author and I have read all her books in the correct order (it makes a little more sense this way)
1. In the woods (in my opinion, the best one)
2. The Likeness (very, very good!)
3. Faithful place (good one!)
4. Broken Harbor (not the best, but still good)
5. The secret place (still good)
Jim is correct, she always takes one or two characters from one book to the next and if you read them in the order they were written (above), your next book will not be spoiled!
Jim is it best? probably, but not necessary. french usually takes a secondary character from a previous novel of hers and makes him/her a primary character in her next. 2 of the primary charcters in the secret place were secondary characters in a faithful place. and 1 secondary character was a fairly central character in the likeness. so depending on your time and interest, you may want to read the likeness, faithful place, and then the secret place. but, it's not necessary. she gives you the all of the essential background to all 3 in the secret place.
