Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?
I’ve never been a fan of ballet, but when I had the opportunity to see a San Francisco Ballet Nutcracker, I jumped at the chance. In the middle of the ballet, I had a flashback that has spooked me for twenty years. I was standing in a room, looking at three old-fashioned, beautiful ballet costumes lying out on a bed. As soon as I saw the costumes, my heart ached; it was like opening a time capsule from your childhood and rediscovering that favorite lost toy. When I snapped out of it, my mind raced over what I saw in those few seconds. What the hell was that? Why did I feel such an attachment to those costumes? Why so familiar? All those questions filled my head for the remainder of the performance, but the one that haunted me deep down to my core… Why do I remember standing there trying to decide which costume to wear?
