Don't expect Harry Potter lightning to strike, and be damn sure you have some basic talent. Don't recycle plots you've seen several million times on bad TV shows. Have something unique to say, and use words readers are likely to know. Also, avoid passive voice. Nothing undermines fiction like passive voice.
