The simple answer is by taking any opportunity I can to take a step back from modern life. For me, this means taking the bus instead of the tube, walking to the next meeting via a different route, parking myself in a cosy corner of the pub, walking across parks or green spaces, ambling around a museum. Sometimes I find it so hard to tune out of the noise of day-to-day life that coming up with inspiration to write is nigh on impossible. I need to remove myself completely, get lost in a new environment, allow my mind to wander freely and my thoughts to align themselves. It may sound cheesy and trite, but for me that is the genesis of inspiration.
