You are remembering the same thing I am, and the book we're thinking of is "A Solitary Blue", where the mom leaves, and the son buys a (crappy) guitar to be more like her. His dad (who is kinda bad at being emotionally present) gifts him a fancy nice guitar, and then he and his dad start bonding.
