Marybeth I didn't even know there were preceding books. I just finished this one and it was fine as a stand - alone.
Rae I wouldn't say you need to, no. This book and its sequel do well to stand alone. You may find it helpful to have read the Song of the Lioness Quartet, but you don't need to.
Pauline You definitely will want to read the concluding book (Trickster's Queen) but you won't need to read the preceding stories. I would recommend them though, as they're good fun & quick reads.
