I read Marta Finds the Golden Door in 1943 (published in 1941) I knew nothing about the Holocaust. The book was nowhere to be found.until 17 years ago when it turned up as Marta and the Nazis. Was this book suppressed until it resurfaced under a new title? There was censorship during the war; the general population did not know about the Holocaust until 1945. How did the author know about them in 1941?

Michelle While it was not know at that time what was going to happen in concentration camps, it was public knowledge that Jews were being persecuted (since the 1930s), arrested, taken to camps, etc. Much of the information came from refugees trying to escape Germany and Nazi occupied territories. The U.S. was not ignorant, and failed to prevent many deaths by not allowing refugees to immigrate. Here are a couple
