One theme is the power of radio - that it may connect people who are worlds apart, like Werner and Jutta (orphans in prewar Germany) with Marie Laure (a blind girl in France) and her grandfather (a soldier of World War I). Even though radio was used as a tool in the war, it has many other uses that are good.
Another theme is the insanity and waste of an ideology such as Nazism, which destroyed good people and bad people alike. Science is like an antidote to the poison of Nazism.
