Goodreads asked E.M. Hodge:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

E.M. Hodge Write about what you know and feel strongly about. When you put the words to paper, read the sentences aloud. If the sound awkward, use words that you do not use generally, etc. then consider re-working the sentences. Nothing is worse than reading something that sounds like the author swallowed a thesaurus.
