Goodreads asked Eva Melusine Thieme:

How do you get inspired to write?

Eva Melusine Thieme I've often said, the best writing material comes from something going wrong in your life. The crappier the day, the better the story. This is how I built up such a following on my blog for expats after being transplanted to South Africa, as there were plenty of hurdles along the way. Don't get me wrong, I've had plenty of wonderful experiences and I've written about many of them, but more often than not I will think up a new story when everything has gone wrong with my day and I start retelling it, in my head, to an imaginary reader. Thinking about how I can make that reader laugh is what inspires me to write it down. If I can make the reader laugh AND help him or her on top of that, by either educating them about a topic or making them feel better by commiserating about a common problem, then that's a bonus. But my first goal is always to entertain, and the knowledge that someone will be entertained by what I write is what inspires me to get started.
