Bigsoph His own experiences as a foreign volunteer in the Spanish Civil War. You can read about them in Homage to Catalonia. He also saw, as WWII ended, the efforts of the USSR under Stalin. Unlike many Fabian socialists he saw the horrors of Stalinism and was not (entirely) blinded by the idealism of much of the early to mid 20th century converts to communism

In short, his idealism in the socialist movement was dashed on the rocks of Stalinist realpolitik
