John Walrath
John Walrath asked:

Did anyone find it odd that Mr. Follett didn't mention the Soviet's war in Afghanistan and its effect on the downfall of the USSR? A ten year war, in many ways the Soviet's "Vietnam," and not a single mention.

Karl What was really odd to me was that he left out the 50's entirely.
Meyers Yes, especially since his book "Lie Down with Lions" is about the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan. Follett's narrative was clearly intentioned to vilify U.S. leaders and not embroil their Soviet counterparts, especially Gorbachev, in the nastiness of unpopular wars.
