Father Goriot is a good one as well :) but The Black Sheep is a good one
Tyler Jones
The Black Sheep was the first Balzac novel I read and it completely cast a spell on me.
Benjamin Kuttner
The Black Sheep is one of my all time favorites.
Mark Sawchuk
Père Goriot is the classic one people start with; it's tight (Balzac has a tendancy to wander at times, and it can be distracting) and it's nearly perfect. Eugénie Grandet is an early psychological novel that is also excellent. Cousin Bette is very good, but is slow getting started.
Ed Callaert
Lost Illusions.
Shamim E. Haque
I was advised to start with Pere Goriot; and I think that's a lovely starting point.
BoBandy
I second Old (Pere) Goriot, and put in a vote for Cousin Bette.
