Nabeel asked:

What is the race/ethnicity of the protagonist?

Lisa Williams I got just the opposite impression- that she was not Caucasian. I think the author leaves it open for the reader to decide. An admirable decision on the part of the author and one of many things I love about this book.
Shelbie While this is not addressed, Ida B. admires a girl with red hair, implying that she is also Caucasian.
