Goodreads asked Richard Smiraldi:

How do you deal with writer’s block?

Richard Smiraldi I get up, go outside and walk around the city. I'll stop in at a coffee shop or pub and just have a coffee or a drink and listen to the sounds, smell the smells and soak up everything. If I get back and I can't write, then I'll write about that - what I saw, what I did. I get many of my tertiary characters this way - as you'll see in Death And Disappearances. Irma, Ignac and the woman on the Upper West side all came from such jaunts.
