Goodreads asked Joanna Rakoff:

How do you get inspired to write?

Joanna Rakoff Well, I read, a lot. Which is very necessary for writing. But I also spend a lot of time alone, working through ideas in my head. Walking is enormously helpful. When I'm really in the thick of a story or chapter or essay, and I don't know what comes next--how to get my character out of the shower and across town, for instance--I'll go for a long run. I'm not a natural runner--I'm slow and ungainly--and I don't care about mileage or times or whatnot, running is just a tool to clear my mind, a tool that always works.
