There are four dogs in the story. (I kept track because I have six dogs and it just comes to me?)
The first one we meet is Pepper, the black lab being walked by Abby Morris. Alive. Makes a very brief appearance only to add to the books atmosphere.
Second is Roscoe, the family's dog. He disappears in the beginning and I believe he was killed by the perpetrator first so that he couldn't hinder the crime. He is never found.
Third is Tas, Wylie’s old mongrel with joint pains. The author forgets about him once he's done with as a plot device. Unbelievably horrible. Alive unless he has succumbed to old age.
Fourth is the police bloodhound Jupiter.

Tas was a stray that shows up at the cabin that Wylie is staying in...the author states that neither he nor Wylie particularly like each other but she and he stick it out together. Interesting that there was food in the cabin for him...where did that come from?? No resolution for him at the end...perhaps he just disappears back to whence he came?

Thanks all. There are other things to read. I don’t like authors who casually insert dogs as plot devices and then simply abandon them like used Kleenex when they’ve served their purpose.
Courtney Stofko
No. Both dogs just kind of vanish from the story.

I think they liked Tas, he did save the child's life by alerting Wylie where the kid was. They didn't write any more about him except he was living at the house. Wylie was concerned about him when he refused to come when she called him.
