No, Wharton doesn't confess; Paul took a road-trip and talked to a couple of people with ties to the case and, after finding out that Wharton had a previous incident with a minor and had worked at the Detterick farm for three days painting the barn, he came to the conclusion that it was Wharton. So no, it doesn't come out as a definite, but it was implied, I think.
