Goodreads asked Michael Dutton:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Michael Dutton Easy answer: Late one evening, between Christmas and New Years', I was sitting on the couch enjoying a glass of wine. Everyone was asleep and I was admiring the industry of my handiwork: the Christmas village and model train platform, which I begin assembling on the first weekend after Thanksgiving.
"Wouldn't it be nice to live there for a while?" I posed.
Voila! The inspiration for the Christmasville Trilogy became manifest!
In the first volume of the trilogy, Mary Jane Higgins suspects that there is more to Christmasville than what meets the eye. Could her suspicions be true? Could she be living in a Christmas village on a 4 x 8 model train platform?
