I just finished Invisible Sun, and while it ties up the main plots, it also clearly sets up for a possible continuation in the future vis a vis the "third faction". Are there any plans for this or was it more of a "leave the door open maybe" type situation?
Charles Stross
It's a "leave the door open" situation.
The "Empire Games" trilogy was conceived of as exactly that—a lone trilogy that would stand as a sequel/continuation of the previous "Merchant Princes" series. At this point, I am done with it—finished with this cast of characters, tired of the setting, burned out, and the editor who provided the impetus for the whole series since 2002 is dead.
However, I don't like to say "never", and I was exactly this burned-out back in 2009, when I finished the original series. It took five years before I was willing to talk about another series, but here we are! So there might at some future date be another story in this setting.

Hi Charles, could you give us an update on Ghost Engine and any comments you might have, unless it induces a massive migraine? The only info I've located says to be published 2023. This was prompted by your earlier comments on Iain Banks and the Culture. I confess my own regard for his body of works as utterly unique and unequalled, no slights intended!

My 2017 reading list was dominated by the first 8 books of The Laundry Files and I enjoyed every minute of it (not a question, just getting the grovelling out of the way, sorry!). Now I realize there's very little chance of AVOIDING London esp. during times of supernatural upheaval, but as you are based in one of the most amazing cities in the world, have any of your works centered on Edinburgh or will they some day?
