In the audio version, it is easy to keep the flashbacks straight. The flashbacks are read by a female narrator, whereas the current investigation is read by a male. I liked how at the end, the flashback brings us full circle, to the beginning of the investigation.

The ending is still a flashback. It is the following school year, but the card hasn't been put on the wall yet and the investigation hasn't started. At the end Holly is on her way to deliver the card to Stephen. Selena is acting weird because of Chris's murder and Holly (IMO) believes that Selena won't get "better" without a resolution to the murder.
