Jonah Yes, it would be very helpful to know music fundamentals and the Western system of music notation before reading this book. For example, from the very beginning the author assumes you know how to read musical clefs, the notation of pitch and rhythm, and understand the concept of pitch intervals. Being able to read music will also help you to hear the musical examples in the book by either playing them on an instrument or singing them yourself.
