My inspiration for writing on any topic is entirely directed by my curiosity. The Sound of Her Own Voice was inspired by reading about Josie Marcus who was the wife of Wyatt Earp. She was a woman from another era who had a sense of adventure and was free to follow it. I found it easy to imagine what her personality might have been and how she might have enjoyed the kind of freedom and autonomy denied so many women in the 19th century. I was happy to research other women who had similar adventures. And, then, I re-imagined myself there and then and wrote myself into Lena.
