Mike asked:

This takes place right around 1000 CE in, at least at the very beginning, some sort of monastery in Ireland. Then a French Bishop gets off a ship and speechifies at them. There was no trouble with the characters understanding each other; is that realistic? What language would they all have been speaking? Latin? Old English?
