I also thought this was problematic. Legally, Runner would get custody of her minor children. In the end, she'd be handing her children and any money they got from SS right into Runner's hands. Diane might have been her beneficiary but any inherited assets would go to the kids.

I also think she figured Runner would never leave her alone, she would always be running from him
