I think that they moved to America after getting married and started a new life there.

Henry says that his father came to America at about 13 years old so his father was not born in America and was very influenced by his experiences growing up in China. I got the sense that Henry's mother was similar and that she did not grow up in America, but I don't recall if it was stated specifically.
