Goodreads asked E.J. Ruek:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

E.J. Ruek "Old Hickory Lane" is a novel based on real life--mine--and my interactions with people, places, and, of course, the animals involved. It took a long time to finish because the last case in the book involves a trailer accident that was extremely difficult to relive. My audio producer, Kirk Winkler, said that that scene was absolutely the most difficult for him to record because of its emotional impact. It was that scene that stopped me dead for two years, before I finally had to either delete the manuscript or finish it. I finished tears.
