Goodreads asked Philipp Schott:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Philipp Schott The Willow Wren is a memory of memories. While I was growing up, my father told many stories of his childhood during the war years. He always wanted to write a memoir, but died much too soon. On the 25th anniversary of his death, I decided to write his memoir for him. Relying on what I remembered of his stories, memories from other family members including his siblings (all but one still living), and the historical record, I was able to construct a rough outline of what happened, but I realized that I had to fill in all the conversations and minor details from my own imagination, so this memoir gradually transformed into a novel.
