Most people think the answer is four, because the four that get the most attention were the four trips taken by Christopher Columbus. But between 1492 and 1504, Queen Isabella sponsored at least nine separate discovery expeditions to the New World. Four by Columbus but also five by other explorers. Juan de la Cosa explored the Caribbean, Rodrigo de Bastidas went to Panama, Alonso de Hojeda explored the coast of Venezuela and Vicente Yanez Pinon and Diego de Lepe sailed along the coast of Brazil.
