Symbolic of the courage and bravery of the individuals who acted on their own sense of what was right even though the world as they know was completely crushed under the suffering and evil influence. I thought the symbolic significance of the key replacing the stone was so much more significant in scope than the idea that Werner hoped for a love relationship with Marie-L. in future. It meant so much more.
