There's one chapter early in the book describing the Turkish invasion of Smyrna, containing a brief but very disturbing, violent passage. There's also a sex scene which could be described as graphic, but it's not gratuitous at all. The main character of the novel is a hermaphrodite, so there's a lot of clinical and frank discussion about reproductive organs. It depends on how mature the 15-year-old is about adult topics. As a parent of a teenager myself, that age would probably be the youngest for whom I'd consider it appropriate; for many other parents it may be older. It's a great book.
