I think life experiences combined with a love of writing make someone a better writer. Every academic aspect of writing can be learned, but if a writer doesn't have an innate love of the craft, it becomes difficult to improve and grow. Everyone has an imagination; writers just have the love of expressing imagination in written form :-)
