Norbert asked:

Is it different from Day's "Characters from Tolkien - A Bestiary", "Tolkien Bestiary". Or are they more or less the same book in different editions? Thanks in advance

Katharine Lumley Inside the cover it states: "Some or all of the material in this book originally appeared in A-Z of Tolkien, The Tolkien Bestiary and/or The Tolkien Encyclopedia, copyright Octopus Publishing Group 1979, 1991, 1993." Hope that helps. :)
David Hi Norbert - sorry to answer 5 years late, but just came across your question. This is all ancient history now, but yes, "A Tolkien Bestiary" (1979) was published in multiple editions with different titles and cover illustrations over the past 40 years. Personally I would have preferred to have kept the title and cover the same, but US and foreign edition publishers are not under my control. Most often they stick to A Tolkien Bestiary, but in the US there is "Guide to Tolkien's World: A Bestiary" and "Characters from Tolkien - A Bestiary" that I know of. There are of course nearly 20 different foreign language editions with various titles as well.
Also, there may also be some confusion with "Tolkien: the Illustrated Encyclopedia": this was a more comprehensive guide book that was published 12 years later in 1991. I felt this was a necessary updating of the bestiary as Christopher Tolkien publication of many of his father's posthumous books gave a much more complete picture of the 37000 years evolution of Middle-earth. It was entirely reorganized with a great deal of new art work and added historic, geographic, biographic, and sociology sections to the natural history approach of the bestiary.
Further confusion over titles undoubtedly arose because in 1993, I put together a small pocket sized A-Z Tolkien reference book with b/w illustrations (the other two are large format books with colour illustrations) as a handy less expensive alternative reference. This smaller format version was published in various editions over the next 30 years under the titles: "A-Z of Tolkien", "The Tolkien Companion", "A Guide to Tolkien", "Tolkien: A Dictionary" and "A Dictionary of Tolkien". All various publishers decisions, not mine.
