Edzy True, there are different versions of the original text, but they differ only in minor ways. The Rouge text is established as the one closest to Cao Xueqin's original intent, and is available edited by several editors. If you read Chinese, I recommend the Cai Yijiang edition. The Zhou Ruchang edition and Zheng Qingshan edition are very close to the Cai Yijiang's, to the point that makes the issue moot for common readers.
