Taylor Robertson I think the point is that he’s saying civilization without freedoms is only tolerable through drugs and brain washing. In other words it’s not natural or ideal for humans. This story also had a lot of religious reference so I think it’s safe to say it’s a point also of the idea that theists believe in life after death and redemption for their earthly sins.
