How well written are the women? I've been debating whether or not to read this book. I love dark and gritty fantasy, but find the women tend to be a bit bland in the genre. I don't mind mostly male characters at all, but I would like to know if the women in the book have some complexity and personality.

I'd say well enough to satisfy your criteria. There are few women in the cast though, and the one that can be considered main character appears very late. The women seen through the eyes of young male officer are certainly "bland" though, except his romantic interest.
