Cecily Reading Mitchell's books in publication order is no bad thing, but I don't think it matters. The two that fit most closely together are The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet and The Bone Clocks (and a third is planned, though it won't be published for a few years). Even with those two, you could probably read them in either order.

Of the others, Black Swan Green has the fewer significant overlaps compared with his other works. So far. That may change. He sees all his novels as part of an uber-book:
