'The Assassin And The Pirate Lord' are before this book, you can get a prequel novel called 'The Assassin's Blade which has everything amounting to a year before the book starts which I really loved :3
Personally, I'd recommend it if you want to read the series chronologically. But you don't have to:) You can just start with TOG and read TAB later:)
