Goodreads asked Anita Swanson:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Anita Swanson The setting for this book takes place in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. Inspiration for this book began in 1995, when I worked in California as a wildlife biologist and spent many nights hiking in the mountains, surveying study areas for California spotted owls. It was a wonderful experience; my survey teams worked in Sequoia National Park, a place populated by some of the most magnificent trees in the world.
One warning, though: don't get caught in a windstorm under the canopy of those giants, for, during those times, their branches rain down like whistling daggers (spoken from experience).
