Most (if not all) of Mildred D. Taylor's books are on the middle grade/YA levels, although she has stated that she writes for all ages. I would recommend it for an 11-12 year old, but be advised of the time period of the book (post WWII-mid 1960s) because there are some instances where the n-word is used towards the main characters and there is some violence, but nothing graphic. Some parents might find this a bit upsetting. There are also no graphic sex scenes, but characters (as adults) do date, kiss, get married and have children.
