This book seems interesting to me, but I have not read the 16 books leading up to this in the series. Can I pick up this book without reading the previous ones, or will I be lost?

Warwick I started with the first and am now up to 17. I have enjoyed them all. I would recommend starting at the beginning as the stories all refer to previous events to some degree.
