Goodreads asked Barry Anderson:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Barry Anderson Under another pen name I wrote a couple of novels and short stories about an alternate world full of people who were kinky, for whom dom/sub sexuality was normal and vanilla sex was rare. It was a great platform for SF erotica as it allowed for lots of fantasy fuel between erotic scenes.

It was also a utopia of sorts, and it occurred to me that it would be all sorts of fun to have a really strong feminist, an academic type (basically a wannabe neoliberal feminist) go there and react to what she sees, while the Collar Land people (as I call it in "Visitor" react to what they see. It would be a great chance for full-blown humor and satire, but I couldn't see any way to keep it as erotica. Funny is generally point, sharp and fast, erotica tends to slow things down as you savor all the sensations, feelings and emotions.

So that's how I wound up writing a mainstream science fiction novel. It's been fun!
