The book did not give much back story on Brian or Francis. What was up with them? Did I miss something?

Sarah Brian is not from Ireland, he's American.
Susan They were broth from Ireland. Brian's parents brought him to the US as a child. Francis came himself, just like Anne. Francis' parents stayed in Ireland and he never returned to visit them and they never came to visit him. Family ties and how they effected people in the next generation. Francis didn't want that kind of distance between he and his children as he had with his distant parents. George tells us that Brian came from a alcoholic family. That both he and Brian had an issue with alcohol. George was able to take control of it, but Brian wasn't. Anne came from a family with mental health issues. Her father was absent and neglectful after her mother committed suicide. He was probably neglectful before then.
