Are the alternating chapters annoying? Just curious.

Aliza Layne not to me. the alternating chapters support each other thematically and the plots turn in parallel ways; neither half would be as good without the other, and i did not find switching back and forth distracting.
Eilonwy For me, the answer is yes and no (yeah, so helpful! Sorry :-).

On the one hand, I am a little irritated by getting yanked back and forth between the two stories -- I find myself absorbed in one, only to get thrown back into the other. But on the other hand, the events in each story do tie together and reflect on each other, so the way they shift back and forth is very artful and does matter to the book as a whole. I'm not sure at this point (75% done) how well either story stands alone, to be honest.
