Just bought this and am wondering if I need to re-read Oryx and Crake before I dive in? It's been years and it's a foggy memory. Or can Year of the Flood stand alone?

I read Year of the Flood without ever reading Oryx and Crake and it didn't seem to be a problem. Of course I can't say if I would have enjoyed it more if I'd read the 1st book since I don't know what the first book brings to the story.
