Judy Lindow (spoiler) This is the loose end. All we know is that Rachel's complete story and the evidence that proves her innocence is never delivered. Did she kill herself, was she killed, did she stay in prison? We don't know. So according to other posts one of the similarities between the fiction, Turn of the Screw (besides the haunted house, nanny, and building of suspense) is that there are loose ends. Imo she should have turned in the letter - the child would have gotten some counseling and it would have put an end to all the secrets. I think living a lifetime with a secret like this would cause far more pain than if an adult worked with the child to understand it was an accident.
