This is a trope I've seen in other books, especially in the horror and fantasy genres. Think Piranesi (Susanna Clarke's new novella) and even Diagon Alley the Room of Requirement in JK Rowling and Alice's Wonderland. Or Roanoke/Croatan in the USA!
