Did I miss something. Why was Maud’s father not her biological father?

Rachel (Fablefinder) Maud and Dina both refer to their father as a guest who saved an innkeeper and her children, which is unusual for guests to do. So I'm guessing that their dad is actually their stepfather who married their mom after saving her. There isn't any mention of their biological father so far, but there are a few loose ends that should be tied up in a later book. Hopefully we get more details soon :)
Phillip Where do you get the idea that Maud's father isn't her biological father?
